Loon lake Lutheran Retreat Center

"A Place Apart"

With over 240 acres of rolling, wooded landscape and over a mile of lake frontage on beautiful Loon Lake, there is a lot to see!  The campground sits on the edge of the Huron National Forest and is a perfect location for hammockers, tenters, and outdoor enthusiasts.

We offer four seasons of activities. Our facilities include three main lodges, a dining hall, 12 summer cabins and a newly renovated cabin.   All located on Loon Lake. We have day use only activities which include a recreation field, challenge course, sledding, cross country skiing, archery, swimming and boating. We are a great location for families, weddings, reunions, vacations, over flow house guest, retreats and Christmas parties.

Built into your fee, is access to Seaholm Lodge.

There is a large main area 46’ x 60’, 10 shower facilities, 10 sinks, deck along entire building, ping pong, air hockey tables, organ, and piano.

Trails

You also gain free access to the many trails on the 248 acres of private campground.

The trails are not marked and do not have signage.  Wander and explore!  When is the last time you did that?

In case of rain, there is a smaller covered pavilion with a fire ring.

Jim Rice Dining Lodge

We are not renting the dining lodge, but since Jim Rice was very near and dear to our hearts, we wanted to you to know a bit about him.  The dining lodge was renamed after the long time chef Jim Rice.  Yes, his real last name was Rice.  Very fitting for a chef, huh?

Big Jim was famous for his quotes and jokes.  One would hear him say "Never trust a skinny chef"  and to those of us kitchen kats "If you have time to lean, you have time to clean".

Nature Center

The Nature Center was a project Homer "Gus" Roberts spent many an hour educating youth on the outdoors.

We are hoping to have the Nature Center open for an hour and Karla's dad, Garland Iseler, to give a brief tour and then a lesson on feathers.  Check this out after breakfast on Saturday!

Be sure to visit the famous Gus & Dot bench.

And if you don't know about who Gus & Dot were, ask. Former staff will love to tell you stories!

Gus and Dot Bench

The view from the bench is the most scenic of Loon Lake and one of Karla "with a k"'s most favorite places on the entire earth!

Here is a picture of the real Gus & Dot!

Here is a picture of Chef Jim Rice and his daughter Jill.  His son Roger Rice is the captain of the AuSable Riverboat Queen.   Jim's wife was the organist at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and also was Karla's Sunday School teacher.

Ask a staff member about the broken clock which kept perfect time, about bug juice, what is their favorite Jim Rice joke, or about Mahn-go burgers.
